On my way to school
I got lost watching myself watching things. Looking through my eyes at my eyes looking at things. At bushes, roads etc. All the colours, the brightness, the clouds and birds. Well, it was really just me seeing what I was seeing. Like, really seeing it.. and realizing that I was seeing it. You know?
My point is that the eyes we have are wonderful for what they let us do. It’s sad that some people are so willing to brush them off as products of random processes with no guidance or purpose.
It didn’t stop there. In class we, at one point, started talking about the muscles of the body. The muscles of the heart, the smooth muscles and skeletal muscles all with different purposes and obviously given their properties for design reasons. We could not consciously control our intestines and heart without messing up, now could we? Makes perfect sense that a designer would make them completely autonomous (usually). This particular class continues to impress me. Our bodies are essentially machines. The way our mind can control each limb is similar to controlling a car or plane. It just happens for us, unlike those systems. We think it and the intention is translated by our brain to all the muscles needed to do the movement the way we wish to. We touched on the muscles of the respiratory system. The muscles responsible for us breathing seem behave as if they are not under our control. You don’t usually consciously breath, which puts it around the same logical construction as the heart and intestines. Vital systems not directly under our control, for obvious reasons. Our mind just handles the breathing, but there is a little modification - we can stop our breathing, breath harder or even faster. From a design point of view, this hybrid position between voluntary and involuntary operation makes perfect sense. We can stop breathing underwater, stop breathing in smoke or gas, breath harder to suck things in and in situations that require more effort to get oxygen in. It just makes sense.
We really should take better care of our bodies. Our situation is like renting the best custom made luxury car for our entire physical lives. I would not feel well not taking good care of such a thing, would you?
God wins.
